BOGAR SIDDHAR AND THE SIDDHA TRADITION

The one who has gone beyond the confines of religion or scriptures and has had the experience of being one with Shiva alone is a true Siddha. Karai Siddhar who lived in the last century distinguishes between a Siddha and a NonSiddha thus: “Siddha is one who directs others in the path of experience whereas a NonSiddha is one who points others to the path of scriptures”. The Siddhas are not bound by any religion, conventions or rules made by society; rather their lives have been guided by the direct experiences of the Divine.   The term ‘Siddhar’ refers to a person who has perfected the Ashtma (Eight) Siddhis. They are said to have the Divine knowledge which helps them transcend the cycle of birth and death. They serve selflessly for the upliftment of humanity by helping people raise their spiritual awareness apart from relieving them of their physical as well as mental ailments.  Bogar Siddhar who is one of the revered 18 Siddhas is well known for his ardent devotion to Lord Muruga. He had mastered all the Siddhis and was especially gifted in the science of Alchemy. With the welfare of humanity in mind, Bogar Siddhar created “Medicinal Idols” of Lord Muruga which had the ability to cure humanity from many incurable diseases during the difficult age of Kali. Palani is an important pilgrimage place and is one of the six ‘Aaru Padai Veedus’ (army camps) of Lord Muruga during his battle against the Asura King Surapadman.  Bogar Siddhar in his treatise ‘Sapta Kandam’ reveals that he was born in the lineage of Viswakarma (gold smiths) and was disciple of Kalanginathar and the grand disciple of  Thirumoolar Siddhar. Describing his life to his disciple Pulipani Siddhar, he revealed that he had received initiation from his Guru Kalanginathar who taught him about all the sacred works (Sasthras), the great epics, Yoga and the method to attain liberation. He learnt Brahma Vidya (Wisdom of Ultimate Reality) from Sage Agasthiar.
